M – Manual System

Manual systems require individuals to discover the fire and activate the alarm to warn others. They typically use a simple button or a ‘break glass’ unit to trigger the alarm. Life Safety System Category 5

L5 Life Safety Systems are highly specialised and customised commercial fire alarm systems designed to address specific and unique risks of premises. Beyond automatic detection and alarms, an L5 system could include a variety of additional measures, including automated metal shutters for shopfronts, fire suppression systems in high-risk areas, heat detection in machinery rooms or smoke extraction mechanisms in stairwells. An L5 system is tailored to suit environments with complex layouts or specific fire hazards, such as manufacturing plants or research labs. Businesses choose L5 when standard measures simply aren’t sufficient per the results of their fire risk assessments.

L4 – Life Safety System Category 4

An L4 system focuses on protecting escape routes to ensure safe evacuation by detecting fires that could block exits. It features manual call points placed throughout the building and automatic detection along escape routes like corridors and stairwells, but not in other rooms. While it doesn’t include automatic detectors in individual rooms, it provides crucial early warnings in key pathways through the building, helping occupants escape safely before the fire spreads. These systems are typically installed in office buildings, schools and hotels, where the priority is keeping corridors and stairwells clear during an emergency.

 L3 – Life Safety System Category 3

A category L3 fire alarm system includes manual call points in various locations as well as automatic detection in all escape routes and any rooms, corridors or compartments connected to them. The objective is to detect fires before they block exit routes. This added layer of protection makes it ideal for buildings where fires could develop in individual rooms and quickly impact exit routes, such as electrical fires from unoccupied server rooms. By automatically detecting fires before they reach stairwells and corridors, L3 systems help provide individuals with enough time to evacuate safely before exit routes are compromised.

L2 – Life Safety System Category 2

An L2 commercial fire alarm system includes all the safety measures of an L3 system with automatic detection added to high-risk areas identified through your fire risk assessment, such as kitchens and boiler rooms. With automatic detectors installed in escape routes, rooms connected to escape routes and specific high-risk locations, L2 offers impressive early detection and response capabilities. This makes it particularly suited for buildings with a higher risk of fires, such as factories and warehouses, with machinery or materials that increase the likelihood of an outbreak.

L1 – Life Safety System Category 1

L1 provides the most comprehensive protection with detectors in all rooms, escape routes and high-risk areas, even including roof spaces and voids, offering the fastest possible detection and widest possible coverage. L1 systems are best suited to large commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, care homes and any high-occupancy venues where a delayed response could lead to severe consequences. By covering all areas, including unoccupied spaces, L1 minimises the risk of a fire going unnoticed before it’s too late. While this may be a more costly fire alarm system, it is the gold standard for fire safety in commercial environments.

P2 – Property Protection Category 2

Unlike Life Safety Systems, which prioritise the safety of occupants, P systems are tailored to prevent property damage and minimise losses in the event of fire. A P2 Property Protection System focuses specifically on detection in high-risk areas where focused coverage may be required, such as server rooms, storage spaces and rooms containing valuable equipment. This makes P2 a great addition for businesses with high-value assets or equipment, like data centres and warehouses.

P1 – Property Protection Category 1

A Category 1 Property Protection system offers the most comprehensive coverage for safeguarding assets, equipment and occupants. With automatic fire detection throughout the entire building, including all rooms and escape routes, as well as tailored systems in high-risk locations, P1 offers exceptional early detection capabilities to ensure rapid response times and swift evacuations. Typically chosen by businesses with high-value assets or operations, such as manufacturing plants, data centres and production facilities, P1 systems help to minimise the risk of damage and reduce potential financial losses.

Audiovisual Fire Alarm Systems

Audiovisual fire alarm systems are fairly self-explanatory, combining both audible and visual signals to ensure everyone in the building is alerted to a fire emergency. With bright flashing lights and loud alarms, these systems are particularly useful in businesses where there may be high levels of noise or where individuals are engaged in tasks that require intense concentration, such as manufacturing plants, warehouses or large office buildings. These systems provide added safety by ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their hearing ability or focus on tasks, are effectively and promptly notified to evacuate the premises.

Conventional

Conventional commercial fire detection systems divide the building or premises into different zones with individual detectors and call points in each zone. When a fire is detected, the system activates the alarm in the corresponding zone and highlights the zone on the control panel, alerting individuals to the emergency at hand. While it can identify the affected zone, a conventional system cannot determine the exact location of the fire. As such, conventional fire detection is best suited to smaller buildings or those with a low risk of fire, offering a cost-effective but perhaps more basic solution.

Addressable

Addressable fire detection offers greater precision by identifying the exact location of the fire remotely. Every detector and call point is assigned a unique address, enabling the control panel to pinpoint which device has activated the alarm. With this level of detail, staff and emergency services can make more informed decisions regarding evacuation and response. Addressable systems also help to reduce the chance of false alarms by clearly indicating the affected area. They are typically installed in larger or more complex buildings such as offices, warehouses and schools, where knowing the precise location of the fire will enhance the safety of occupants and streamline the evacuation process.

Wireless

Wireless fire detection systems operate in the same way as addressable systems, with one small but highly impactful change – the detection devices are wirelessly connected to the control panel. By using radio frequencies to transmit signals, wireless systems eliminate the need for complex wiring. This flexible, modern solution is perfect for businesses or buildings where extensive cabling installations may be difficult, disruptive and expensive.
